Sustainability tastes sweet — with reCIRCLE food containers

Take-away meals are now part of everyday life. They are a convenient option but are rarely good for the environment, given the mountains of plastic waste they create. However, "fast food" is now being replaced by "fast good". Vontobel’s employee restaurant has become one of the first in Switzerland to introduce reusable food containers.

"Tell me what you eat and I will tell you who you are." In keeping with the words of the gastronomist Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin (1755–1826), we should now add: “And tell me what you eat off.” After all, fast food rapidly gives rise to large quantities of plastic waste whenever meals are purchased from canteens, employee restaurants, takeaway stands and food vans to eat elsewhere. Unlike the ingredients used in those meals, the food containers themselves tend to disappear beneath the radar of food scouts, spotters and bloggers, as well as kale evangelists. The Swiss start-up firm reCIRCLE is addressing this issue and has launched new multi-use takeaway containers in the market.

Washing up brings a shine to environmental impact assessments

The dishes and cups are not only free from problematic BPAs but are also watertight and microwavable. They can be stacked in a space-saving manner and easily stowed in a bag or rucksack. Most importantly for large kitchens and restaurant operations: They can be cleaned in a commercial dishwasher.

After ten wash cycles, the environmental impact of reCIRCLE food containers is lower than that of the single-use containers in widespread use across Switzerland. With each additional use, the impact of the CO2 produced during manufacturing is further offset.

Supported and served by Vontobel

reCIRCLE began its success story as a small Swiss start-up that received project funding from the Climate Foundation Switzerland. Vontobel is a co-founder of the Climate Foundation Switzerland and has been a member of the organization since 2008. It is therefore especially pleased when climate-friendly products make it to the serial production stage. In this case, it is even better since the path has led indirectly back to the beginning. As a result, our employees can enjoy the sweet taste of sustainability in Vontobel’s employee restaurant Uto in Zurich. Bon appétit!
