Celebrating watchmaking excellence at Vontobel
At Vontobel, we have a long-standing history and passion for watchmaking and the fine jewellery industry. We focus on quality and precision, and we partner with others who emphasize these same values.
Last spring, we partnered with the online watch magazine “WatchAdvisor – Your Time. Our Passion." to sponsor their exclusive coverage of “Watches & Wonders 2021”. It was a celebration of watchmaking excellence, and we provided WatchAdvisor's direct reporting from the fair, along with in-depth industry knowledge in Vontobel's latest "Swiss watch industry outlook" livestream replay.

Our luxury analyst René Weber, who has been with Vontobel for 34 years, presents the "Swiss watch industry outlook", together with his colleague and successor Jean-Philippe Bertschy.
The Swiss watch industry has one of its toughest years behind it. Exports plummeted by 22% due to the global lock-down, similar to the decline seen in 2009 during the financial crisis. Swatch Group in particular has been hit hard, with smartwatches not making it easy for traditional watchmakers. However, Vontobel analysts expect a strong rebound in the second quarter of 2021 (+18%), though not a return to 2019 levels. This rebound will be driven mainly by Mainland China, which became the largest export market for Swiss watches for the first time in 2020.

Starting May 2021, Jean-Philippe Bertschy will take over responsibility for the equity research coverage of Swiss luxury brands. Jean-Philippe joined Bank Vontobel AG as a financial analyst 11 years ago. Among other roles, he previously spent seven years as partner and equity analyst specializing in Food, Luxury Goods and Business Services at NZB Neue Zürcher Bank. With more than 25 years of related analyst and consultant experience, he worked closely alongside René Weber as Head of our Consumer Goods team for the past five years. This experience and Vontobel’s long-established relationships with the “who’s who” of the Swiss watch industry are and will continue to be the distinguishing feature of Vontobel’s research coverage of Swiss luxury stocks.
Vontobel Research provides in-depth primary analyses of Swiss companies by specialists with direct contacts in senior management.
