Interview with Dr. Fabian Unteregger

Dr. Fabian Unteregger is a comedian, entrepreneur and co-founder of the leading Swiss healthcare startup organization Swiss Healthcare Startups and the ETH Circle. As a board member and advisor of numerous startups and a hospital, he has a lot of experience in the healthcare sector. People know the Prix Walo award winner from countless TV and stage shows. He can be heard live weekly on SRF 3 with "Zum Glück ist Freitag". Fabian Unteregger is the winner of a promotion scholarship, holds a doctorate in human medicine from the University of Basel, a master's degree in food science from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), and an executive master's degree in secondary and higher education from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH). In the video interview, he talks about the importance of sleep, balanced diet and exercise for a healthy life. He also emphasizes the opportunities of data diversity in healthcare.

What is the red thread in the life of Fabian Unteregger?

  • Fabian Unteregger's answer

I believe there's one thing and it's called passion. I think it's worthwhile taking greater risks, in order to enable yourself to unfold the way you would really like.

Is the topic of healthcare and medicine omnipresent?

  • Fabian Unteregger's answer

All you need is a balanced and healthy life: enough sleep, a balanced diet and regular exercise. This will prevent us from using medicine or the medical system.

What is missing in the healthcare brand?

  • Fabian Unteregger's answer

We pay too much and we need to empower the patient. The data of a patient should be stored centrally.

Is it an advantage to have data in one place?

  • Fabian Unteregger's answer

If we're talking about personal data spread around in your social media, it's probably not a good idea, because crawlers take and use it to input into machine learning algorithms.

Should all medical data be in one place?

  • Fabian Unteregger's answer

Definitely yes. In a hospital the doctor should get an overview very quickly, in order to give the patients the medication they need and to treat them accordingly.

How could the data transfer between doctors, hospitals and patients work?

  • Fabian Unteregger's answer

The data can be stored in a cloud and accessed from anywhere in the world with a key. The data is therefore available to anyone you authorize.

Do you see any benefit to social media?

Wellness & Health: An industry with a big potential

The once-casual question has taken on a profound twist. Not only because wellness and all kinds of sports activities have become an everyday ritual for young people along with the ever-growing group of “silver agers”. Driven by social media and the many smart devices surrounding us — fitness trackers, phones, smart watches, and other wearables — we measure our health on a daily basis — as an individual and as society.

Together, we generate vast amounts of data which influences our perception of well-being on two levels, personally and in society as a whole. It all relies on an interconnected understanding of our health.

For companies, it opens up a new field for innovation involving the established pharmaceutical industry as well as start-ups.
