A video interview with the former Vice Chancellor of Germany

On July 1, 2019, the first Vontobel Impact Event took place in eastern Switzerland, addressing the theme: "A Europe of Regions - Model for the Future?" Following the event, the former German Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel did not hesitate to appeal to the conscience of Europe.

Europe has achieved something that the world can be proud of: Former enemies became friends, who today speak out together as part of the European Union – and it accomplished this within the span of just one generation. But Sigmar Gabriel is convinced that the EU's global policy could make a much greater mark if national interests would not torpedo its effectiveness.

Europe has everything it needs to join the G3 with China and the US

In our video interview with Sigmar Gabriel, you will find out where Germany’s former Vice Chancellor, Economic and Foreign Minister sees the opportunities for Europe. And why Switzerland can serve as a model for Europe – and especially Germany.

About Sigmar Gabriel

Sigmar Gabriel shaped German federal policy from 2003 to 2018, first as Environment Minister, later as Minister of Economics and Energy, and finally as Foreign Minister. In 2017 he decided not to pursue a candidature as Chancellor in favor of Martin Schulz, and in May 2019 announced that he would no longer run for office, even in the general election in 2021. Gabriel graduated in German language and literature, political science and sociology. A gifted writer, he shapes public debate to this day, authoring articles in various newspapers such as "Die Zeit" and "Der Tagesspiegel".

Who are we? How do we live today? And how will European policy change our lives? How the future will unfold is preoccupying society more than ever, with engineers, doctors, politicians – each one of us, in fact – seeking answers. This interview with Sigmar Gabriel is one of many contributions that shed light on the subject of “Europe” from a new, inspiring perspective. We are publishing them here as part of our series “Impact”.
